A dead battery is one of the most common reasons cars won't start. The right fix depends on why it's flat.
Why batteries go flat
- Age (many last around 4–5 years), lots of short journeys, lights or accessories left on, cold weather, or a faulty alternator not charging it.
Mobile mechanic — best if the car won't start at home or work. Many can test, jump-start or fit a new battery on the spot.
Local garage — better if the battery keeps going flat, as they can test the charging system and look for a fault draining power.
Before you pay for a new battery, ask for a battery and alternator test. Replacing a good battery won't fix a charging fault.
FAQ
- Can a mobile mechanic replace my battery at home?
- Yes, many carry common batteries and fit them on site.
- Why does my battery keep going flat?
- Usually age, short trips, an electrical drain or an alternator fault.
- Is a jump start enough?
- Only if the battery is healthy and simply drained; otherwise it will go flat again.
