Brakes are the one job you shouldn't put off. Here's how to tell what's needed and get a quote you can trust.

    Warning signs

    • Grinding or metal-on-metal noise when braking — often pads worn to the backing plate, which can damage discs.
    • Squealing, a spongy pedal, the car pulling to one side, or a brake warning light.

    What's usually replaced

    • Pads wear fastest. Discs last longer but are often replaced with pads if worn or scored. Fluid should be changed at the intervals in your handbook.

    Getting comparable quotes

    • Ask whether the price is for front, rear or both axles.
    • Ask if it includes pads only, or pads and discs, and which parts brand is used.
    • Ask for labour and parts to be shown separately, plus VAT.
    • Ask what warranty comes with the parts and the work.

    FAQ

Why is my car grinding when I brake?
Commonly worn pads or a stone trapped near the disc. Get it checked promptly.
Can I drive with grinding brakes?
It isn't recommended — braking performance may be reduced and discs can be damaged.
Should pads and discs be replaced together?
Not always, but often if discs are below minimum thickness or scored.
